MaryMargaret’s Cell Phone Drive

December 23, 2008

Well MaryMargaret is now officially on her Christmas break Cell Phones for Soldiersand the cell phone drive she was conducting is officially over, at least as far as her school is concerned.  She learned about Cell Phones for Soldiers through her own Kids Are Heroes web site, as Brittany and Robbie Bergquist founded this organization when they were young teens.  This is now a large multinational non-profit charity that recycles old cell phones and trades them in for free phone cards for our troops all over the world.  What a great idea.  She has collected 38 cell phones to date and has more to pick up from the Chamber of Commerce just after New Years.  So, if you have cell phones sitting in a drawer somewhere now would be a great time to put them to good use.  If you are local to Frederick, MD, drop me a note at gabe@kidsareheroes.com and I will come pick them up.  If you are not local, you should be able to find a drop off point close to you via their web site.

UPDATE: MaryMargaret’s cell phone drive is officially over.  She has received 55 phones which has made her really happy.  If you missed her drive and would still like to donate, you may do so through www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com.

KAH on FaceBook

December 20, 2008

With this web site I honestly feel I am sitting atop a volcano right now, not knowing when it will burst.  It can’t do that by itself, so I am out there trying to raise more awareness about www.KidsAreHeroes.com.  To that end I have joined FaceBook thanks to the advice of my friend Bob who is the king of social networking.  I am pleased to know that a number of my family and friends are already on it, and am already enjoying the personal interactions.  I started a group on FaceBook called Kids Are Heroes with the hopes that I can get more people to join, and attract some newcomers so they can learn more about it.  My ultimate goal is to get the stories found on KidsAreHeroes.com in front of more people, so we can enlist their help in achieving the goals that the heroes strive for.  The ultimate objective of the site of course is to inspire other children, so the more people we can get in front of, the more parents will be showing their kids the site.

I really encourage parents of heroes to join by simply going to www.facebook.com.  It’s free and you probably know a bunch of people that are already on it. Look me up and I can help you get situated. I use the email address gabe@chillyautumn.com.  Other people that read this and are on FaceBook already we’d love to have you in the Kids Are Heroes group.

Our First Heroes from Canada

December 13, 2008

Every day seems to bring something new to the excitement of the web site.  At the time of this writing the last two days produced by far the most shout-outs ever recorded and the most hits the web site has ever enjoyed.  To the teacher(s) that led the shout-out barrages, we’d love to hear where your school is and how you came up with that idea.  Reading the messages from the children has authenticated the goal of the web site, and that is to inspire others by showing other kids what is possible, even at a young age.

Speaking of young ages, Finn Case is a seven year old that hails from Alberta Canada.  This young boy is already making a difference not only in his community but on the planet.  We are very proud to have him in our community as we expect his story will inspire countless children.  He is our first hero from Canada.  He will be followed shortly by his “partner” Ryan who is now 17 but created Ryan’s Wells when he was 7.

First Press for “Music for Life!” Project

December 1, 2008

Ike Wilson from the Frederick News Post wrote a great article in the FNP this morning about MaryMargaret’s Music for Life effort.  Hopefully this will help start to bring about the awareness we will need for this venture.  Check out the article here.
