More Music for Life

MaryMargaret at the Valley Mall

MaryMargaret at the Valley Mall

MaryMargaret was at the Valley Mall this weekend as part of the Pillars of the Community Day.  This mall is in Hagerstown, MD which is about 30 miles from where we live.  Not  many had heard of Kids Are Heroes, so that was a good thing that we were able to spread the word.

MaryMargaret was also collecting donations for her Music for Life program, an ambitious effort to buy MP3 players to the kids at Children’s Hospital in Washington DC.  So far she has raised just over $1700.00!  She will take what she has before the end of the summer and purchase them for delivery.  If you would like to know more about this project, or would like to donate, please click here.

Evan for Life

Evan and his Water for Life project.

One of our heroes is Evan Frank.  He is an 8-year-old boy who has already dug his first well in South Africa.  We had the honor of meeting him at the Valley Mall in Hagerstown, MD this past weekend for the Pillars of the Community Day.  He worked tirelessly to garner new donations for his second well.  He is very well spoken about the condition, and as you can see he has a lot of visuals.  He, along with the other kids on the web site, is a constant reminder of how powerful kids can really be.

MaryMargaret and the Camp Kids

MaryMargaret gave a presentation this morning in front of a number of kids that signed up for “Camp Make a Difference” in Columbia, MD.  Normally her dad speaks and she takes over a slide or two. This time she did the entire presentation herself.  The kids were extremely receptive and excited about it.  We hope to be featuring them in the near future.

KAH Wins PitchTV Contest

June 3, 2009 by GabeONeill

In April of 2009 we entered a contest sponsored by Richard Branson, owner of some 200 companies including Virgin Atlantic Airlines.  We were to submit a 2 minute video pitch of what we do – the 10 best pitches would be featured on Richard Branson’s blog site, 5 of which would be chosen by the blog readers to be featured in his first Pitch TV show.  The reason we entered was simply to thank Mr. Branson for being our inspiration for starting the Kids Are Heroes project.  I never really thought I would appear on his web site let alone win.

Not only did we win, but we are featured first in his premiere PitchTV show. This show is part of the onboard entertainment for all Virgin Atlantic flights in the month of June.  So if you are flying Virgin Atlantic this month, check us out. If not, that’s OK, you can still watch the show here.

Schools Now Being Featured

MaryMargaret Presents at Middletown Elementary

MaryMargaret Presents at Middletown Elementary

This is what we have been pushing for – to get schools to notice and participate in our web site. A number of stars lined up for that to happen recently.  First, we had the privilege of speaking to the entire student body at Middletown Elementary school last week. MaryMargaret’s spring break was different than theirs so it provided her with a rare opportunity to speak to the school about Kids Are Heroes as well as her Music for Life program.  The presentation was a resounding success – our mission was designed to spark as many young minds as we could to get involved and from what I hear it worked beyond our expectations.  Apparently children are posting ideas in the hallways about what they can do and parents are readying themselves to nominate their children.

Our first school showcased is Thurmont Middle.  Something tells me Middletown Elementary will be next.  We are thrilled and are hopeful that this will be the start of an outpouring of school involvement.  So if you know of a school that you think should be featured – have them nominate themselves in the ‘For Schools’ section.

Honorary Member of LRR

Anna Lemick is a hero featured on the Kids Are Heroes web site.  She has actually been featured more than once.  One of the “perks” of being on the web site is being included in the monthly fund raisers hosted by the FSK Mall.  Each month the folks at the mall have been generous enough to donate the fountain coins to one hero’s charity.  Anna had the fountain coins for January.  She collected $537.00 and donated it all to Labrador Retriever Rescue, Inc.  They were so excited they made Anna an honorary member of the rescue group, complete with framed certificate. Way to go Anna!!

Successful Event

February 21, 2009 by GabeONeill

Last night was MaryMargaret’s “An Evening of Music for Life!” at Holly Hills Country Club.  Singer (and hero parent) Mark McKay entertained while guest bartenders (including yours truly) served the guests.  I would like to thank Meg Klackner and Dan Grose, who were not only my fellow guest bartenders but were also responsible for bringing many people to the event.  Two heroes from the web site, Anna and Julia Lemick, were there to solicit donations and support MaryMargaret’s efforts.  All in all it was a great night of fun and we raised over $400.00, which brings our total close to $900.00.  Thanks to all who came out and supported us, and we look forward to seeing you again on March 22nd!
